Privacy
We collect as little as we can: enough to send the newsletter to people who ask for it, and to understand whether the publication is useful.
Reading the site
You don’t need an account to read or listen, and we don’t show advertising or use advertising trackers.
Analytics
We use PostHog, hosted in the European Union, to understand which stories are read, whether readers finish them, whether they use the history and timelines, and whether they come back each week.
- Without your consent we count visits in cookieless mode: nothing is stored on your device, and visits can’t be linked to you over time.
- If you accept cookies, PostHog stores an anonymous identifier on your device so we can see whether readers return. We don’t record your screen, and we don’t link this identifier to your name or email address.
You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of any page.
The newsletter
If you subscribe, your email address is held by Buttondown, the service that sends the newsletter. We use it only to send Hindsight. You’ll be asked to confirm your subscription, and every email has a link to unsubscribe.
Keeping the site working
The site is hosted by Vercel. We use Sentry to be told when something breaks. These services process technical information such as your browser type and IP address, which is needed to deliver pages and fix errors. It isn’t used to identify you.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, or object to how we use it. Contact us at the contact address on this site. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
